How to Apply for PAN Card Online - PAN Application

PAN or Permanent Account Number is an important document which is required to carry out certain tasks. Given this, it is necessary to have  card which contains a unique 10-digit alphanumeric code which is issued by the Income Tax Department.

You can apply for the PAN card either online or offline. Here, we take a look at how you can avail of the card using online mode via the Protean eGov Technologies Limited (formerly NSDL) and UTIITSL website.

Procedure for Existing Customers to Apply for an e-PAN

The procedure for existing customers to apply for an e-PAN is mentioned below:

  • Visit https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/ReprintDownloadEPan.html.
  • Enter details such as the Permanent Account Number (PAN), Aadhaar number (in the case of individuals), date of birth, GSTN (optional), and captcha.
  • Click on ‘Submit’.
  • An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number.
  • Enter the OTP to download the e-PAN.

In case you have not updated the email ID and mobile, you must complete that process first.

How to Apply for a PAN Card Online on Protean eGov Technologies Limited Website (formerly NSDL)

If you are applying for a new PAN card, you will have to fill in Form 49A or 49AA depending on whether you are an Indian citizen or a foreign citizen. Keep in mind that this is primarily for applicants who don't currently have a PAN card and have never applied for one. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1:Visit the NSDL website's Online PAN Application section

Step 2: Select your application type: Form 49A (Indian Citizens) or 49AA (Foreign Citizens) or Changes or Correction in PAN/Reprint of PAN Card.

Step 3: Select your Category. The options are: Individual, Association of Persons, Body of Individuals, Trust, Limited Liability Partnerships, Firm, Government, Hindu Undivided Family, Artificial Judicial Person, and Local Authority.

Step 4: Fill in the Title, Last name/surname, First name, Middle Name, Date of Birth/Incorporation/Formation in DD/MM/YYYY format, email ID, mobile number, and Captcha code. Submit the form.

Step 5: On the next page you will receive an acknowledgement with a token number. Click on 'Continue with PAN Application Form' on this page.

Step 6: You will be directed to fill in more personal details similar to Form 49A or Form 49AA. Input all the necessary information.

Step 7: Choose how you want to submit the documents. You can: a) Forward application documents physically; b) Submit digitally through digital signature; c) Submit digitally through e-sign.

Step 8: On the same page, indicate what documents you are submitting as proof of identity, address, and date of birth. Confirm the declaration, place and date of application. Review and submit the form. Make sure you make no mistakes.

Step 9: Click on 'Proceed' and you will be taken to the payment options. Choose between Demand Draft and Online Payment through Bill Desk.

Step 10: If you choose Demand Draft, you will have  to make a DD before you begin the application process as you have to provide the DD number, date of issue, amount, and the name of the bank from where the DD is generated on the portal.

Step 11: If you choose Bill Desk, you can pay through Net Banking, and Debit or Credit Cards.

Step 12: Click on 'I agree to terms of service' and proceed to pay. The PAN application fees will vary based on whether you are sending documents separately to Protean eGov Technologies Limited or uploading them online.

Step 13: If you pay by using your credit card or debit card or via net banking, you will receive an acknowledgement receipt and payment receipt. Print the acknowledgement receipt.

Step 14: Attach two recent photographs along with the acknowledgement receipt.

Note: Do not staple or clip the photos. Ensure that you sign across the photo that you attach on the left side of the receipt. Do not sign the photo on the right. Ensure that your signature is within the box provided. If you use your left thumb impression, ensure that it is attested by a gazetted officer or a notary.

Step 15: After payment is confirmed, send the supporting documents via post or courier to Protean eGov Technologies Limited.

Once your documents are received, Protean eGov Technologies Limited will process your application. If you have provided your office address as your preferred address for communication, you will also need to submit proof of office address along with your residential address proof.

How to Apply for a PAN Card Online on UTIITSL Website

The procedure to apply for your PAN card on the UTIITSL website is similar to the one above. The only difference is that you have to first visit https://www.pan.utiitsl.com/PAN/#one. Scroll down and click on PAN Card for Indian Citizen/NRI. A new page will open where you will have to select one of the options – Apply for New Pan Card (Form 49A), Regenerate Online Pan Application, or Download Blank Pan Form.

Once you fill in the details and get the acknowledgement receipt you will need to take a print out of the same and mail it to your nearest UTIITSL office along with copies of the required documents.

How to Apply for a Reprint or Change Details on your PAN Card Online

You can apply for a reprint of your PAN card on both the Protean eGov Technologies Limited (formerly NSDL) and the UTIITSL websites. The two situations wherein you can apply for a reprint of your PAN card are:

  • You already have a PAN number but the PAN Card is damaged.
  • You have lost your PAN Card.
  • You wish to make a few corrections or changes to the details on your existing PAN Card.

To apply for a reprint of your PAN, you will have to fill out the CSF form.

How to Apply for a Reprint or Correction of PAN Details on UTIITSL Website

Step 1: Visit https://www.pan.utiitsl.com/PAN/#

Step 2: Select if you want both a physical copy of your PAN and an e-PAN or the e-PAN only.

Step 3: Click on ‘Reprint Pan Card’, after which a new page will open, there click on ‘Reprint Pan Card’.

Step 4: Fill in the required details.

Step 5: Enter the captcha and submit the form.

Step 6: Pay the fee.

Step 7: Print the acknowledgement receipt and mail it to your nearest UTIITSL centre. Do remember to also include copies of the necessary documents (identity-proof, address-proof, and proof of date of birth documents). You must also enclose a copy of your Aadhaar card.

Step 8: You will also have to submit proof of an existing PAN card.

How to Apply for a Reprint or Correction of PAN Details on Protean eGov Technologies Limited Website (formerly NSDL)

Step 1: Visit the Protean eGov Technologies Limited website: https://www.pan.utiitsl.com/PAN/#.

Step 2: Click on ‘Change/Correction in PAN Card’.

Step 3: A new page will open where you will have to click on ‘Apply for Change/Correction in PAN Card details’. Fill in the required details. Fill in the required details.

Step 4: Pay the required amount.

Step 5: Print out the acknowledgement and send it to the Protean eGov Technologies Limited office by post. Ensure that you also mail the required documents (identity proof, address proof, and proof of date of birth).

Step 6: You may also be required to provide proof of an existing PAN card. You can also choose the digital or paperless mode to make the correction or changes to your PAN Card.

Note: It is against the law for any individual to own two PAN numbers. Fill and submit form 49A only if you are applying for a PAN card for the first time.

Charges Levied to Apply for a PAN Card Online

Apart from applying for a PAN Card, you can also make corrections, changes, or request for a PAN Card reprint online. You can apply for a PAN Card on the official website of UTITSL or Protean eGov Technologies Limited (formerly NSDL).

In case the communication address is in India, the charges levied for applying for a PAN Card is Rs.93 (exclusive of GST). In the case of a foreign communication address, the charges levied for applying for a PAN Card is Rs.864 (exclusive of GST). Once the payment has been made, you must submit the relevant documents. The PAN application will be processed only if the relevant documents have been processed.

Date of Birth Proof for Applying for a PAN Card Online

One of the below-mentioned documents may be submitted as proof of date of birth:

  • An affidavit sworn before a magistrate stating the date of birth.
  • The marriage certificate that has been issued by a Registrar of Marriages.
  • Pension payment order.
  • Health Service Scheme photo card provided by the Central Government.
  • Ex-servicemen can provide the Contributory Health Scheme photo card.
  • Domicile certificate that has been issued by the Government.
  • Any photo identity card that has been issued by the State Government or Central Government.
  • Any photo identity card that has been issued by a State Public Sector Undertaking or Central Public Sector Undertaking.
  • Birth certificate that has been issued by a municipal authority.
  • Mark sheet or Matriculation certificate that has been provided by a recognised board.

Applying for a PAN Card Offline

Step 1: Go to the official Protean eGov Technologies Limited website (formerly NSDL) - https://www.tin-nsdl.com/

Step 2: Under ‘Downloads’, click on ‘PAN’. A new page will open where you will have to click on ‘Form 49A’. If you are a non-resident individual (NRI) or a foreign national, click on ‘Form 49AA’.

Step 3: Download this form.

Step 4: Fill in the application form.

Step 5: Upload photo copies of all supporting documents (elaborated in the section below) along with a passport size photograph.

Step 6: You should pay a fee of Rs.110 which can be paid via cash or demand draft.

Step 7: On your envelope, you should write 'APPLICATION FOR PAN -N-15 DIGIT ACKNOWLEDGEMENT NUMBER'. Example, 'APPLICATION FOR PAN -- N-881010200000063').

How to track the status of your PAN card application

  • UTIITSL or NSDL websites allow you to check the status of your PAN card application online.
  • By using your coupon number or PAN along with your date of birth, incorporation date, agreement date, etc., and captcha code, you can check the status of your PAN card application via the UTIITSL website.
  • You must enter the 15-digit acknowledgement number on the PAN card status tracking page of the NSDL (Protean) website in order to check the status of your PAN card application.

How to Check the Delivery Status of a PAN Card

  • Once your PAN card application has been submitted, you can check the delivery status of your PAN card online using the Speed Post tracking portal by entering the consignment number.
  • Additionally, you can track your shipment using SMS. To check the status, just send the text "POST Track 13-digit article number>" to the numbers 166 or 51969.
